The Nectar Mattress Review: Is It the Sweetest Mattress Around?

Summary: This unbiased Nectar Mattress review features our team of Sleeping Ninjas’ analysis and in-depth look at this popular mattress. Disclosure: Sleeping Ninjas has an affiliate relationship with some companies where we get a small percentage of sales if you click over from our site.

Nectar is “bed in a box” solution that promises to be cheaper and more comfortable than leading competitors like Casper and Leesa. Right off the bat, Nectar looks promising. It’s made from vegetable fibers and cooling gel—equal parts eco-friendly and high-tech.

The Nectar mattress is made from a unique 11” memory foam construction, This super thick mattress consists of six layers that enable maximum air-flow and ample support. Meaning, its a popular choice among side and stomach sleepers seeking pressure relief.

Here, we’ll take a look at the Nectar, to see how the mattress stacks up against other major online sleep companies.

Let’s start by cruising through the features of this Nectar Mattress review so you can see what the bed is all about:

The Nectar Mattress Review: Primary Features

Multi-Layer Memory Foam

The multi-layer memory foam is a key feature of the Nectar. Below we’ll go from top to bottom, which should give you a sense of how the mattress works to create a cool and comfortable sleeping experience.

* 1″ Top Comfort Layer – The first layer of the mattress is made from Tencel fiber, a breathable material that helps whisk moisture away from the body and regulate your temperature as you sleep.

* 1″ Support Layer – Below the cooling quilted 4lb. Cooling gel foam layer which is something unique. It gives the unique feel and provides great pressure relief.

* Transition Layer – The fourth layer is what Nectar has dubbed, Hi-Core Memory Foam. This material is a high-density foam that alleviates pressure from various points in the body.

* The Foundation –Finally, the base of the mattress, brings nearly 6″ of high-density foam, something the company refers to as the High Vegetable Base Super Core.  The plant-based bottom layer adds firm support in contrast to the softer gel foam you’ll find toward the top. This layer supports the body and gives the bed a sturdy foundation.

So, how does the layered construction translate to comfort? Here’s a rundown of what Nectar claims to provide for sleepers:

Sleeps Cool

We outlined the layers above, but one of the critical benefits of how this mattress is constructed is, it’s specially designed to keep sleepers cool.  Unlike traditional memory foam beds, the Nectar provides temperature control–the breathable cover keeps sleepers cool, but the lower layers work to distribute body heat more evenly.

The two gel foam layers disperse your body heat as you sleep so you can sleep cool. While the vegetable base layer circulates airflow, preventing you from overheating, even on hot nights.

Additionally, because the construction prevents sagging, it’s unlikely to trap as much heat as a traditional memory foam bed. Overall, many of the positive reviews from Nectar customers state that this mattress helped cut back on night sweats significantly.

More Springiness than Your Average Memory Foam Mattress

The Nectar provides a little more bounciness than most memory foam mattresses, which tend to fall toward the static end of the spectrum.

While foam mattresses are quite stable, the denseness of the bed doesn’t provide a lot of spring-back. See the video below for a look at the mattress’ motion transfer in action.

Nectar provides more rebounding than a typical foam, due to its adaptive HI core layer. But, it also brings the silence and stability of a traditional memory foam mattress.

That said, the Nectar excels at bridging the gap between an inner-spring mattress and static foam bed. You won’t feel like you’re stuck in one place, but you’ll still get that cushy, personalized support.

Works for All Types of Sleepers

Unfortunately, Nectar’s firmness is not customizable—your only choice here is whether you want a twin, full, king, or queen. But, the balanced approach to firmness offers a one-size-fits-most solution–one that’s friendly to sleepers of all stripes.

Here’s how: the contouring upper layers of the mattress conform to your frame, no matter what your size. This helps alleviate pressure on your hips, back, and joints, especially if you’re someone who sleeps on their side.

Additionally, the lower layers work to keep you from sinking into the mattress, propping you up for proper alignment. That lack of sagging prevents your spine from bending in your sleep–meaning you won’t wake up with back or neck pain.

Finally, if you sleep on your back, the Nectar contours around your body, so it feels pretty firm for those laying face up–again, the lower layers prevent the sinking and sagging that causes back sleepers discomfort.

Nectar is also designed for the rare stomach sleeper. The multi-layered approach works to alleviate any pressure on the chest and stomach, relieves pressure on your chest and stomach. At the same time, prevents the back from bending during sleep.  Most people find that the mattress is adequately firm, but some stomach sleepers may find that their hips do sink into the mattress.

Excellent Support

Right off the bat, you’ll notice that the Nectar feels quite soft and plush, thanks to the quilted cover and multiple layers of gel foam.

The layers toward the top respond quickly, and conform to your frame immediately, while the lower layers take longer to respond. The lower layers are a bit firmer than the quilted top layers, bringing a sense of balance to the sleep experience. It’s through this combination of plush and firm that the brand has been able to create a mattress that brings both pressure relief and support to people while they sleep.

Nectar is still a memory foam bed, and as such, you won’t find much bounce with this product. The slow-responding lower layers will give you a distinctive “memory foam hug,” but most customers say that you won’t get that trapped feeling you’ll find with some mattresses.

The blend of soft and firm is a real boon for heavier individuals, as well as sleepers who move around a lot, it’s easy to change positions, and you’ll find support whether you’re on your back, stomach, side, or somewhere in between.

And Minimal Motion Transfer

If you share your bed with a partner or have a gaggle of kids and pets, motion transfer is definitely going to be a factor in your mattress choice.

As per the reviewers at Sleepopolis, dropping a 10-pound ball on the mattress will yield the following results.

As you can see, it takes a pretty significant impact to disturb your partner. Meaning, you’re probably not going to wake them up if you get up to use the restroom or move around a lot in your sleep.

The Nectar Mattress Review: Customer Service Perks

Nectar is an interesting case. Above, we discussed the logistical issues plaguing the brand. The mattress maker also provides some distinctive benefits. Beyond being a medium-firm, bouncier-than-average memory foam mattress, the Nectar proves to be a relatively affordable bed with some generous offers that sweeten the deal.

Trial Period

Nectar offers a generous home trial. In fact, the site states that it’s the longest trial period in the mattress industry. And that’s saying something, Casper, for example, offers a 100-night trial. With Leesa, it’s the same.

Nectar definitely has the competition beat with that whopping 365-day offer, allowing you to sleep on the mattress for a full year before making your final decision. No questions asked.

The Allure of the Forever Warranty

Nectar’s forever warranty guarantees the mattress for as long as you own it. Additionally, the company mentions that if any impressions deeper than an inch and a half form they will replace the mattress.

Presumably, this means that Nectar will replace your mattress if anything happens to it from here on out.

Shipping Details

Nectar mattresses ship for free and, if you opt for the white glove service, delivery comes set-up. Even better, Nectar will deal with your old mattress.

That said, Nectar ships exclusively within the United States. According to the site, the mattress will arrive 1-5 days you place an order. It’s worth noting that during promotions, the mattresses sometimes sell out, causing a delay in shipping.

Not to harp on the BBB entry (see below), but the organization did include a notice regarding shipping delays. In many cases, customers did not receive notifications when mattresses shipped late or were rerouted. It’s unclear if they have since resolved this issue, but we recommend avoiding this company if you need a mattress by a specific date. As of a few days ago, the BBB was still receiving delivery complaints.

How to Buy the Nectar Mattress

Currently, the only option for purchasing the Nectar mattress is directly from the official website. It’s a typical e-commerce experience; you’ll add the mattress to your cart and check out.

Additionally, the company offers financing options for up to six months, no credit check required. All Nectar asks for is a valid credit card and proof of income.

Nectar Mattress Review Pricing

Nectar is a wallet-friendly mattress, it’s still in line with the competition, but as compared to brands like Casper, Nectar provides a better value. Nectar caps out at $900 for the King-sized options. Other box-bound options can cost sleepers $1200 or $1500, depending on which retailer they use.

Pricing is as follows:

  • Twin-$500
  • Twin XL-$550
  • Full-$700
  • Queen-$795
  • King-$900
  • Cali King-$900

That said the company offers frequent discounts, right now, you can receive $125 off your order, plus two pillows to go with your new bed. White Glove service is an additional $149 and includes set up of the new mattress and removal of the old one.

According to the website, the Nectar works well with the brand’s foundation, atop your existing box spring, or with any type of frame. The pine and spruce foundation isn’t much to look at. It can best be described as “brown” or “minimal” and seeks to provide an easy solution to narrow door frames.

We’d suggest going this route if you’re a mattress on the floor type or just want something convenient. Otherwise, you’ll get a little more style if you shop around for the bedframe of your dreams.

So, What Are the Nectar Cons?

It’s Not Super Bouncy

We don’t have a bone to pick regarding Nectar’s bounce factor, but if you prefer the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress, this isn’t going to bring the sound sleep you were hoping for.

The mattress was constructed to provide comfort and offload some of the pressure people experience during sleep, the same level of bounce that innerspring beds are known for. Really, what makes a sound sleep for one person, may feel off to someone else.

You Might Notice a “Smell”

Some customers have complained about the noticeable smell released when Nectar is taken out of the box. Most boxed mattresses come with this smell, and it tends to disappear after a few days. Just be sure to let it air out in a well-ventilated space.

Review Issues

Unfortunately, we noticed that several customer reviews highlighted some problems with shipping, returns, and canceled orders. Again, Nectar is a newer company, and they may still be working out some logistical kinks here and there.

We didn’t find too many negative Nectar mattress reviews about the mattress itself—mainly the customer service. The white glove service, which sets up your mattress, failed to show up in many cases.

Few suggested that the product was of poor quality. Again, memory foam can be a divisive subject in the mattress game, but a lot of the complaints can be chalked up to the fact that Nectar mattresses are made for people who like foam mattresses, but want something slightly bouncier than the standard memory foam construction.

By contrast, we looked around to see if Leesa, Casper and their ilk received similar complaints. Leesa customers voiced some concerns on Amazon (though still retained a 4-star average), but nothing compared to the BBB backlash. We didn’t see any other brand in this category with this many complaints.

How Long Will the Nectar Last?

Nectar is a denser, foam-based mattress. With that in mind, you can expect the mattress to last between 8-10 years. That said, Nectar is a relatively newer company, we don’t know how long the product will actually last in the wild.

Nectar’s website assures you that the “forever warranty” means you won’t have to buy a new mattress ever again—but only time will tell as to whether they continue to honor their generous promise.

Anyway, based on the Nectar mattress reviews we found, it seems that some of these too-good-to-be true perks might be an attempt to regain the public’s trust.

About the Company

Nectar Sleep is a Palo Alto-based company dedicated to making beds. According to the Better Business Bureau website, Nectar and DreamClouds LLC are one in the same. The latter division focuses on traditional, spring-based mattresses. Nectar has the memory foam market cornered.

The official website, NectarSleep.com doesn’t share too much information about who they are and how the mattress came to be, but they have a comprehensive FAQ section. The founding principle here is, that it shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg to put together a quality mattress.

Unfortunately, the BBB site lists a whopping 215 customer complaints about DreamClouds/Nectar—resulting in a D+ score. While we know BBB ratings aren’t everything, the site highlights a number of issues. Customers cited problems with delivery, the quality, and smaller details like the vinegar-y off-gassing smell.

That said, the mattress has also received a wealth of positive reviews, mainly for its comfort and affordability.

Conclusion for Our Nectar Mattress Review—Does Nectar Make a Sweet Mattress?

After looking more closely at this Nectar Mattress review and the mattresses key features, pros, and cons, this product works best for existing memory foam fans. People who already like memory foam, but want something that keeps them cool and supported all night long.

The thick, comfortable layer isn’t right for everyone. While the multi-layered construction helps the Nectar avoid some of the usual memory foam pitfalls, it’s worth pointing out that some users may feel trapped by the bed. Some might even experience that slight sinking feeling you’ll get with most foam beds.

Nectar is quite breathable, thanks to the winning combination of gel and Tencel quilted into the memory foam. Memory foam can heat up fast, and it’s great that the brand has done so much to reduce the potential for hot and sweaty nights—even if it’s 90 degrees out.

The use of memory foam in the thick comfort layer provides some great pressure relief, which is very important for side sleepers. There’s an increase in weight concentration when you sleep on your side, which puts pressure on joints and other areas.

In the end, we found that the negative reviews associated with this company gave us pause. It’s one thing to not like a mattress. We all sleep differently and thus have different requirements. However, when the mattress fails to inflate or the delivery truck never shows, then we have issues.

We hope that Nectar gets it together. In the meantime, it might be worth getting a great deal on a mattress that will probably help you get a better night’s rest.
